Honda has long been known for their reliable, fuel efficient, compact cars mostly designed for city driving. However, in 1995 Honda released the Odyssey, billed as "Honda's first minivan". The next generation brought the first Honda Odyssey wheelchair van as yet another import mini van offered an alternative to the established domestic brands that had so far dominated the wheelchair accessible vehicle market.

The Third Generation of Honda Odyssey was the first to be converted for wheelchair access. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control was included in all trim levels. Additional features included integrated sunshades in the rear doors, windows that roll down in the second row, and the third row 'Magic Seat' was changed from a straight bench design to a split 60/40 design to allow for variable folding. Third generation models offered a dashboard-mounted shifter, instead of a column-mounted shifter. The EX-L and higher trims could be purchased with either a rear entertainment system or both rear entertainment system and navigation. The 2007–09 Odyssey was the best-selling minivan in the United States.

The introduction of the Honda Odyssey as an option of wheelchair accessible vehicle in its previous generation shook up the wheelchair van market once again. With the Toyota Sienna being converted for wheelchair access before the Honda, and the positive reception the Honda Odyssey received when it became available as a wheelchair van, it seemed that the market was shifting in favor of imports. Known for reliability and good fuel economy, the Honda Odyssey was an attractive choice for potential buyers. This new generation of Honda Odyssey improved upon the previous generation in a number of ways, but most the most notable changes were to the interior space, which increased markedly, as well as the available safety features. This generation saw the introduction of a Blind Spot Monitoring system, Forward Collission Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and a LaneWatch camera mounted in the passenger side mirror which shows a video of the lane next to you once your right blinker is turned on.

By the time Honda released the Fifth Generation, the Odyssey was firmly established as a solid choice of wheelchair van. This new generation saw many upgrades, such as an all new 10-Speed Automatic Transmission, which was 29 lbs lighter than the outgoing 6-Speed Automatic that it replaced, this was the first 10-Speed Transmission that Honda had used in any prouction vehicle. Technology upgrades have been the name of the game for new generations of vehicles coming out, and the new generation of Honday Odyssey wheelchair accessible van has a new suite of safety features which brought it on par with its main competitors; the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna.
