Will Medicare Pay for Wheelchair Vans?

Over 44 million people are covered under Medicare health insurance and another 70 million are covered under Medicaid programs, many of whom live with mobility related disabilities. These government funded health insurance programs are used to cover many medical needs, so a common question is: will Medicare (or Medicaid) pay for a wheelchair van?

The short answer is: wheelchair vans and and conversions are not commonly covered under Medicare or Medicaid (which generally follows Medicare rules). But as with most government funded programs, rules may vary from state to state, so the surest way to know is to check with your health insurance program administration.

Note to FL Residents: If you are eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, and you live in Florida, you may qualify for assistance through the Med Waiver Program.

Rules for Durable Medical Equipment and “Medically Necessary”

The Medicare.gov website explains: Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers medically necessary durable medical equipment (DME) that your doctor prescribes for use in your home. Only your doctor can prescribe medical equipment for you. DME meets these criteria:

  • Durable (can withstand repeated use)

  • Used for a medical reason

  • Not usually useful to someone who isn't sick or injured

  • Used in your home

  • Has an expected lifetime of at least 3 years

The rules defining “medically necessary” are very strict, but there may be some circumstances where your doctor would recommend a wheelchair van as a medically necessary DME.

The good news is, when you’re looking to purchase a wheelchair van or to have handicapped accessibility modifications made to your current vehicle, there are several options to help make a wheelchair van affordable, including disability grants and similar type funds.
